Your Mountain Adventure Starts Here
Whether you’re here for hiking, scenic overlooks, kid-friendly activities, or local food and wine, the High Country has something for everyone. We’ve highlighted some of the best things to do within 10–30 minutes of Hawk’s Nest.
Easy Access, Big Reward
Just minutes away, Waterfalls Park offers an extremely easy walk with stunning cascades — a perfect quick stop for all ages. For something more adventurous, Linville Falls and Upper Creek Falls deliver dramatic views and refreshing swimming holes. The High Country is packed with waterfall trails, from simple roadside access to rugged backcountry treks.
Epic Views, Rugged Trails, Endless Options
If you love a challenge, the Linville Gorge offers some of the most dramatic terrain on the East Coast. Closer to home, Upper Creek Falls (6 mins) is a personal favorite — a beautiful loop with waterfalls, pools, natural waterslides, and forest scenery. For big views, hit Hawksbill, Table Rock, or Grandfather Mountain. There’s no shortage of trails, from heart-pounding climbs to peaceful forest walks.
Local Vineyards With Mountain Charm
Enjoy mountain-grown wines at Banner Elk Winery or Linville Falls Winery, both offering great tastings, gorgeous scenery, and weekend events that make lingering easy. Nearby options also include Grandfather Vineyard & Winery, a popular riverside spot with live music, food trucks in warmer months, and plenty of shaded seating. It’s the perfect way to spend a relaxing afternoon!
Fun for Every Age!
Visit Linville Caverns for an underground tour, dig for treasure at Sugar Creek Gem Mining, or ride the Alpine Coaster at Wilderness Run. Beech and Sugar Mountain both offer year-round activities, from scenic lifts to summer fun zones. Back at the cabin, the game room has shuffleboard, darts, and an old-school arcade with thousands of games.
Breakfast, BBQ, Live Music & Hidden Gems
Start your morning at Kaye’s in Newland — and if you’re there on a Saturday, check whether Chef Roopy is running his made-to-order breakfast buffet. For BBQ, beer, and live music, you can’t go wrong with Big Al’s, Old Hampton, or The Pineola (which has a great vibe any night of the week). Back at Hawk’s Nest, enjoy the fire pit, walking paths, and plenty of firewood ready to go.
Snow Fun Right Down the Road
The Jonas Ridge Snow Tubing Park (3 mins!) is the closest and easiest winter adventure for groups of all ages. Sugar Mountain Resort or Beech Mountain Resort both offering skiing, snowboarding, and beginner-friendly options. Kids will love the Beech Mountain Sledding Hill, and winter views along the Blue Ridge Parkway make every cold-weather outing feel extra special.
